The cadence

1. Fix the variables

   One tool (Angry IP Scanner fits), one range, one fetcher set. The method works because nothing changes between runs — set it up once per the recipe.

2. Sweep and export

   scan-2026-09.csv. Boring names, one folder, no cleverness to forget by January.

3. Diff the host column

   Sorted files, text diff, or two windows and honest eyes. Appeared and vanished rows are the entire signal.

4. Question every delta

   New row: the kettle or a stranger — only one is fine. Vanished row: a retired gadget or a failing server — only one is fine. The method's value is that it forces the question monthly instead of never.

Extending it

Windows offices add a quarterly share audit; managed infrastructure re-runs the port map after hardware changes. Three artefacts per quarter — a swept host list, a share report, a port map — is a network you can prove you knew.

That proof is the product. Dashboards impress visitors; dated files convince auditors, insurers and future you.
