About ScanLAN Pro

An independent, free course for the people who look after small-office networks — written as lessons, not product pages.

Who publishes ScanLAN Pro

ScanLAN Pro is published by ScanLAN Pro Publishing LLC, a small independent publisher registered in Delaware, USA. We write practical, vendor-neutral training for people who look after small networks — office managers who inherited the IT, one-person IT departments, and the technicians at small managed-service providers.

Why a course

Most material about network scanners is either a product page or a list of features. Neither tells you what to do on Monday morning with a network you did not build. We think the useful unit is a lesson: one idea, explained with real screens and real commands, and an exercise that leaves something behind on your own network.

The twelve lessons follow one office from an empty page to a signed-off security report, because in practice the steps depend on each other: you cannot judge a scan without a map, or an access finding without knowing what was intended.

How the lessons are made

  • A realistic lab. The examples come from a lab network modelled on a small accounting firm, “Kestrel & Vale”. The firm is fictional; its structure — a domain, a file server, a NAS, printers, a camera recorder, a guest Wi-Fi — is deliberately typical.
  • Vendor facts from the vendor. Everything we say about Network Scanner — version, requirements, licensing, features — comes from LizardSystems’ own pages, and was last checked in September 2026. Where the program cannot do something, we say so.
  • Vendor screenshots are labelled. Screenshots of Network Scanner are the vendor’s and show its sample network. Console screenshots are our own, from the Kestrel lab.
  • Windows tools are named as Windows tools. When a lesson uses PowerShell, icacls or Group Policy, it says so, so you always know which tool did what.
  • Safety first. Every lesson assumes written authorisation to scan, and the course never shows techniques for getting into systems you do not administer.

Independence

ScanLAN Pro is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by LizardSystems, Microsoft or any other vendor. We receive no payment for featuring Network Scanner, we do not sell licences, and our download buttons go straight to the vendor’s own site. We chose Network Scanner for this course because it does one job — showing shares and who can reach them — clearly, runs without administrator rights, and has a free licence for learners.

The site carries no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Corrections

If something in a lesson is wrong — a setting that behaves differently, a command that fails, a fact that has changed — please tell us at hello@scanlanpro.biz. We check every report, fix confirmed errors in the lesson itself, and update the “checked” date where product facts are concerned.
